EFPA Bingo

The EPFA participates in Bingo fundraisers at Caesar's Bingo in West Edmonton Mall. It is a convenient location and we have the opportunity to participate in VBingo. VBingo requires two volunteers to stay late, earning us an additional Bingo fund pool allocation (Friday & Saturday Bingos only). Last year we made over $13,000 which equals out to $53 per volunteer hour.

This year we'll also be trying grade themed bingo nights, allowing parents to meet new parents in their child's grade. Of course we still welcome volunteers from other grades!

Welcome and 欢迎 to the new Elmwood Families!

The ESC/EPFA would like to extend a huge and warm welcome to all the new Elmwood families. We are excited to include the new Mandarin program families along with the STEM and ISP program families - this is going to be an exciting year and we look forward to including all families in our ESC/EPFA activities. If you have any suggestions on how we can be more inclusive, please feel free to reach out to info@supportingelmwoodschool.org - we are happy to learn and grow!

Nurture our Naturescape!

The Naturescape is a place that has been loved by Elmwood as an outdoor classroom and learning space. Over the years, it has had some additions and maintenance but it is time for an overhaul to ensure it works for all students at Elmwood. Thanks to the incredible donation of time and skill by an Elmwood parent, Katharina Kafka, we have a plan in place.

This plan will blend science, First Nations, Metis, Inuit perspectives and our love of environment to our own backyard. The updated Naturescape will feature a teepee, grassy open area, plants that will show changes in Spring and Fall, composters, and a water feature creekbed.

There will be many curricular connections made by each class but here are just a few:

Kindergarten - Play Based Learning, Exploring Environment and Community, Personal and Social Responsibility
Grade 1 - Animal Movement, Changing Environments, Interactions with Natural Systems
Grade 2 - Landforms , Interactions with the Sun, Plant and Animal Growth and Development, Life Cycles
Grade 3 - Materials in Natural Form,  Matter,  Earth's Changing Surface, Human Impact on our Environment,  Soil, Interactions Between Plants and Animals
Grade 4 - Sustaining Life on Earth,  Earth Spheres, Natural Resources and Conservation, Organisms and their Survival
Grade 5 - Particle Model of Matter, Forces, Energy Resources,  Climate and Weather, Plant Systems
Grade 6 - Particle Model of Matter,  Forces, Energy Resources, Earth Systems Interacing with the Sun, Climate Change, Ecosystems, Plant Processes

In spring of 2023 volunteers started removing weeds in preparation for the summer work. Over the summer of 2023 a landscaping crew completed some changes to the grading and planted some new trees and shrubs.

In spring of 2024 volunteers replaced the pathway, placed edging, planted sod, built a new platform and shed, and added weed barriers and perennials to the north half of the Naturescape.

Next spring, we hope to invite more volunteers to help us finish the weed barrier and perennials in the southern half, and build the water feature.

About Elmwood School

Elmwood School is a diverse school that offers three excellent programming options: STEM (Sciences, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), Individual Support Program, and Chinese Bilingual. It is important to note that Elmwood School is not a community school and only offers Alternative or Special Education programming options.

Elmwood is the first elementary school in Edmonton Public to offer the STEM Program starting in the  2023/24 school year! This is a shift from the Sciences program that Elmwood has provided for many years however we feel that this is simply an evolution of the work that we already do with the students and school community. The STEM program supports students in learning with a focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Students will learn to research and solve real-world problems in innovative ways, and gain a deeper understanding of each of the STEM fields and how they work together.

We are very excited to continue to grow our Chinese Bilingual Program at Elmwood School and will be accepting registrations for Kindergarten and Grade 1 for the 2023/24 school year. The program is designed to provide children an opportunity to learn the Chinese language, in addition to the regular curriculum, and to experience the richness of both western and eastern cultures. Please contact the school office for information about registering for this school year.

Elmwood School also offers an Individual Support Program that supports students with severe to profound developmental disabilities in grades 1-6. Elmwood's inclusive school community provides numerous opportunities for all students to interact with one another - through classroom activities, buddy groups, school-wide assemblies, and special events.
